How to Spot if your Dog has an Anal Gland Problem

It’s quite a common problem for dogs, especially in smaller breeds such as Toy and Miniature Poodles, Chihuahuas, and Lhasa Apsos. Cocker Spaniels, Beagles and Basset Hounds also rank highly on the list of breeds commonly affected by anal gland difficulties. As well as a very strong smell that you’re likely to notice, there are a few more symptoms to look out for to spot whether or not your dog has an anal gland problem. If your dog begins to scoot their rear along the carpet, frequently turns to lick or bite the base of their tail or anal region, or displays discomfort when passing stool, there is a good chance that your dog has an anal gland issue.

How to Treat an Anal Gland Problem

There are two ways to treat this – (I know which one I prefer!)

1.) Going to Your Vet – Expressing Anal Glands

If you think your dog may be suffering then you should take them to the vet to get a professional diagnosis. The vet will then be able to express the dogs anal gland which will empty the foul smelling fluid. This can be a reoccurring problem and may lead to many time consuming and costly trips to the vet. The next stage is to learn how to express the anal glands yourself and the vet may instruct you on how to do this. Farm and Pet Place do not recommend attempt to treat without veterinary guidance. I must give you a warning though – this is not pleasant! Even the strongest of stomachs can be turned!

2.) Using Glandex Soft Chews
